Hi All

Sunday we had a local auction and as I was at a loose end I decided to pop along. I was amazed at how many tools etc were for auction and how cheap most things went for.

There was a "granite chopping board" but when I had a look at it I noticed the bottom of the box said Axminster Granite plate, I had a look on the web and it turns out its a flat granite block for sharpening etc guaranteed to be within 1000th inch flat. anyway I won that for only £18 but damn it was heavy lol

There was a "selection of levels" which I picked up for £30 which consisted of a cheapo 2ft level, a "The Boss" 4ft level, a 2ft Rabone something level aswell as a T-Tech Trend 50" slide clamp and two 4ft steel rulers.

I also picked up "multi tool" for £18 which I only purchased as it came in a metal case with loads of accessories but turns out its a Fein Multimaster so nice bit of kit for the price.

I picked up two large halogen heaters for only £5 the pair.

And finally what I went for was a Jet Jssg -10 Wetstone machine which I ended up buying for £90 but it came with the extra drawer storage base, metal polish and also diamond stone dressing jig thing aswell as normal straight sharpening jig.

So all in I paid about £170 and think I did quite well.

ok now this brings me to my question. The wet stone machine has a big wetstone and what I thought was meant to be leather honing wheel but the black wheel on the machine is hard plastic with a rubber outside bit but am I right in thinking you dont have a rubber wheel for anything and maybe the leather has come off? I see you can get a replacement leather honing wheel like this one on ebay -

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/351783097116? ... EBIDX%3AIT

but my wheel is solid whereas the replacement is the outer bit so how do I attach it, am I missing the middle silver bit needed to attach the replacement to my machine?

Anyone got one of these machines or got any ideas?

thanks in advance

Colin

No idea about the wheel, but I think you are well on the way to becoming a second hand tool dealer!

Buy cheap in bulk where the tools are not understood, add correct identification and sensible pricing, then list online.

It sounds so easy, when you know what you are looking at. But if the lots had been from some other specialist field (paintings, porcelain, comics...) it suddenly looks hard (assuming you are not a specialist in those things.) Presumably the other buyers at the auction were not well informed about tools.

Any way, you got yourself some nice Xmas presents!

too be honest I have no idea about any of the tools, I only went for the wetwheel the others just seem cheap at the time the auction came up so went for them, the granite plate was the only thing I noticed which I thought I should get as was displayed as chopping board and Ive seen them mentioned on here a few times (see I do learn).

Just need to sort out the wheel on the wetwheel then all is good. All things were also sold as good working order so I didnt need to worry if I had bought a lemon.

Sounds like a great few buys, it certainly pays to be in the right place and right time.
If you can contact the manufacturer of the wet wheel machine then i'd expect them to be able to supply a replacement. Alternatively if you measure the bore of the wheel (or diameter of the mounting shaft) then i'd expect you could find a similar wheel from another supplier. Worst case you may need to make a reducing bush or something but overall not too much effort for potentially a very useful machine.
Having said all that I actually prefer to use a flat leather strop as opposed to the wheel

Thanks, I have contacted Jet tools to ask so just waiting a reply.

Yeah I bet the next time I go to the auction there wont be anything there LOL

cheers

Hi technium, are you sure the rubber you mention on the wheel isn't just leather that's full of polishing compound? I have a tormek and at first sight it looks like rubber too. Maybe give it a scrape to check?

I have the jet wet stone. The honing wheel is solid plastic with a leather face, so yes, check that "rubber" isnt just very well used leather.

Be very careful using the diamond truing tool, It eats the wheel material very quickly, and the wheel is a very large part of the price of the entire machine. I dont use mine at all now but the wheel still makes stuff sharp..

Thanks, ive managed to find a parts list and I have the big rubber wheel but the leather honing wheel is another part which slips over the rubber wheel and is then held in place by a metal "honing wheel end cover" and plastic lock nut. So its the leather wheel part and end cover that im missing. I think the end cover could be easily made from a metal disk but I have contacted Axminster as they are the only uk stockists of Jet so fingers crossed they can help me out.

thanks

your description doesnt match what I have.
heres mine

The wheel is hard plastic, the leather is tack glued to the plastic. the metal plate covers a 4" hole in the hard plastic. theres no rubber anywhere.
Hope this helps

aha!, yes, you are missing everything shown in my picture.
The drive wheel with the rubber band that the motor shaft pushes against is underneath the wheel in my pic.

That parts list shows the plastic / leather wheel as obsolete.
But my parts list from axminster does not say that and shows you need all parts from 17 to 22 inclusive

no I dont think its obsolete I think its just because its a normal replaceable part and I can buy that from axminster and ebay etc, its the metal part I need which I think I may have to make if axminster cant source it which theyve just replied to say they dont stock those parts but will contact Jet for me.

think seriously if you actually need that honing wheel, I suspect the cost of those parts will almost equal what you paid for the machine.
And delay on parts... I asked axminster for some parts for my bandsaw. I was quoted 4 months.

WOW 4 months, well im in no rush but I doubt I will bother if its too much or too long await.

thanks for your help mate.

Colin
