I have a lot of veneered MDF cuts to make and whilst looking for a saw blade I somehow managed to stumble into Festool territory!
I've always been happy with my Dewalt saw and homemade guide rails. But if I get a new blade chances are I'll have to remake my guide rails!
So is the Festool TS55 with 1.4m guide rail still the current fave?
Axminster have it for £432.
Is there anything similiar / cheaper!
Also I'm VAT registered - does anyone know if I buy this tool to make furniture for my business can I claim the VAT back?
Cheers

yes there are a few clones about in my eye the only one near the quality of the ts55 are the Mafele ones.

My advice is buy the ts55 you wont regret it, look out for a demo near you if you try one out.

Its not just the saw thats good the festool blades are very good, they cut veneered mdf very well but i sometimes do a scoring cut first with the saw set at about 8mm that will cut about 3mm deep then cut again at full depth.

I cannot see why you wouldnt be able to claim the vat back its just like any other tool for your business.

We've got the dewalt plungesaw and rail at work and we claimed the vat back on that so i dont see any reason why you cant on the festool.

mind you if you already have the dewalt plunge - you could just buy the dewalt rail and clamps

Thanks chaps - should have said my business isn't woodworking though - it's just I'm making the furniture for the shop - so not sure if that makes a differerence.
No don't have a Dewalt plunge saw - it's a old model (build like a tank mind!)

Your business is electronics isnt it ? - I think you could make a reasonable case that a plunge saw and rail is an electronic item ;)

;)
Well I've gone for the TS55 with a 1.4m guide rail plus some extras. And one of my most crazy purchases - a Lamello Dosicol glue applicator for biscuits!

Well done is it your first Festool purchase ? if it is you maybe on that slippery slope

As regards the VAT I didnt know woodwork wasnt your primary business, your accountant would be the best person to speak to.

Yes first Festool purchase - a luxury I'm sure but I need to get this job done as quickly as possible! Yes will check with my accountant - got a feeling it might be a no no but we'll see. I just hope I haven't missed some 10% off at Axminster voucher ...

I don't mean to bang on about it or grease slopes, but if you need to get that shop furniture built quickly then it makes total sense to buy yourself a domino. Even if you sell it in a few months.

Wizer - I'm not sure dominos would give me much advantage over biscuits for something like this? And I have to learn to use it!
Still maybe for some other furniture in the shop ... :)

Sorry to steer the thread off track, but does anybody know of a similar glue applicator for Dominoes? I find spreading glue on both Domino and mortice (and on both sides of the joint) quite a task when you have quite a few to do.

Crikey - thought it was expensive - didn't realise you need to add the cutters and dowels for another £180!
Would love it but really is too expensive even if I got VAT back!
Biscuits will be fine for what I have to do.
Thanks jlawrence - I'll check when I see my accountant - the money's spent now whether I can claim the VAT back or not!
Cheers

Gidon, it comes with the right size cutter for your needs so you only need to buy a packet of 5X30 dominos. I'm sure most people think they need the entire kit but generally it's not required.

Thanks Si - funny I looked at the various reviews and details and couldn't see the cutter included. Now I notice it does include the 5mm cutter which I guess is ok for 19mm sheet goods?
I would love an excuse to buy the domino - but will see how I get on with biscuits.
Cheers

Yep 5mm is fine for 19mm mdf. The advantage is that when you do a dry run the hole assembly will hang together on the doms.

The 6mm posted above was a typo

Claim the VAT back. if the accountant doesn't like it then he/she will pick it up at year end.

How long before you realise that you actually needed TWO rails and connecting bars

The 'business' (whether yourself as an individual or a ltd company) owns the tools and should use them for the purposes of the business, including making furniture required by the business, that is all fine so claiming back the VAT is completely legitimate.

Technically, if you take it home and use it you are getting a benefit in kind and should pay income tax on this. However, should you forget to tell your accountant so he can declare it on the P11....

Remember though that if you do sell them (the tools) in the future that you will have to charge VAT on the sale.
