Hi folks , can someone give me suggestions for making a featherboard for our wadkin spindle moulder, ie what material to make it out ,what thickness , what angle for the cuts & what spacing , that sort of thing. Does it also need to be long enough to go past the cutter or is that not nescessary. Also does anyone here favour pens instead of pencils for marking off timber & can you get them so that ink wont clog up with dust , cheers Tony

Hi Tony I tend to make concertina guards from MDF or an old Formica kitchen work top shown in this article
http://www.peterseftonfurnitureschool.c ... rticle.pdf
I make them out of MDF between 6mm thick up to the 38mm as shown this depends on the thickness of material being machined.
Cheers Peter

Thank you for the Link Peter

It's not set up I just popped it on for the photo.
Just a bit of beech offcut, saw kerfs with bandsaw, shaped to fit. Clamped with whatever clamps you have. No rules about size I tend to make one up as necessary (5 minutes or so) and fit it by trial and error. Bigger ones for bigger workpieces etc. I'd have it roughly centred on the spindle but move it about to see where's best.

Pencil. Easy to clean off. H to 2B. Softer thicker pencil for more visible lines
