thinking of using sapele hardwood for a new casing its external and does have a very heavy door which will be reused

the timber yard only really stocks rough sawn and would need machining Hull area if anyone knows anyone, i have a record rebate plane and my dewalt router1/2" 2000W but unsure how easy or hard it is to machine i know sapele has cross grain etc

would you use sapele ? if not why ?

thanks and look forward to response

Sapele is maybe interlocking to some extent but ok to work if you use a block plane on the final finish. I have machined rough sawn hardwood (Sapele) into a door frame using a table saw, electric hand held planer and hand tools, it took me an evening to make the door frame. It was when I was a young lad with little machinery. Utile is another hardwood you could use which might be marginally more durable.

thanks for your input i appreciate it i am thinking or routing large amount of stock off with my 1/2 router then finish the rebate with hand planes etc i also have plunge rail saw which i could use

Sapele is a good choice for an external door frame.

I live in a small village nearish Hull, think about 30 miles away in the direction of Howden/Selby. I have a planer thicknesses and spindle moulder etc, let me know if I can be any help.
