Well I've had quite an afternoon! I happened upon a chap who has an obscene amount of wood that he would like to give me. It's all in log\trunk form and scattered around his property. I got a bit from him today but really I shouldn't be lifting anything at all, let alone very very heavy logs. It's not done me any favours and I'm currently laid up, preying I haven't done any damage.

It leaves me with a conundrum. Ideally I want to get a load of it soonish, in case he finds another way to dispose of it. Also he may not be keeping it in the best manner. I guess my only option is to hire a chainsaw and cut it down. Perhaps even hire a van.

Anyway pics to follow tomorrow as it was dark when I unloaded. Needless to say I won't be buying any wood for quite some time!

For the long version of this story check out my blog

If there's that much Tom is there a chance that someone else on here could go with you to do soe e of the heavy work and split the wood? Just a thought. I can't volounteer living down whee I am but would if I was closer.

yep - I got as far as half writing a pm offering to help ( I have a chainsaw and a pick up) before common sense kicked in - kent is just a tad to far for me i'm afraid, and swimbo would kill me if i brought home anymore wood at the moment as thanks to Malcolm (opener) i have rather a lot already...

there must be someone in the kent/essex/suffolk area who could help you out though

I have a big ol' people carrier and although no good at turning or clever
stuff I can pick up heavy things.

If someone else can chainsaw it up I'ld be more then happy to move it around and transport it, if you wanted to come to some sort of arrangement.

Just a thought.

If you guys do this i can lend you a spare chainsaw and probably safety gear - but someone would need to pick it up from me and drop it back ( I could arrange to meet at a services on the M4 or maybe M25 or something but thats as far east as i can justify going)

Thanks guys. Just a quick disclaimer. This wasn't a post offering wood. Not that I wouldn't want to share but I can't yet promise someone else's wood away. At the moment he's said "take as much as you want", but I need to gauge just how much he wants to give away first. If it turns out that he wants rid of the vast majority then I am more than happy to get a group of us together and divide it between us.

Allen (Blister) has kindly offered to come down with me to pick up some more, at which time we'll get a better idea of how much he really wants to give away.

I'm also investigating having the trees planked for him. As Allen just reminded me. Planked wood needs to sit and season for x amount of years which he might not want and I'd love but don't have the space. Again, this might end up being offered to the forum. I have contacted 'wills-mills', if you know of any other mobile saw mills in this part of the country please speak up.

So continue to show interest but please don't shoot me if it doesn't come to anything.

Bit of damage to the end grain here. It's fine on the other end.

This was another piece of trunk I got from another FreeCycler.

It's heavily cracked on one end and has some fungus growing on it.

Any idea what this is??

I'm going to get the emulsion out tomorrow and give all the ends a covering.

The unknown looks a bit like a fence post to me Tom. May be wrong. The yew should have some nice figuring in it. Those cracks often hide some lovely colours.

No it's definitely part of a tree, has bark on. I'll see if I can chop off the cracking tomorrow and see the grain better.
