Another day another bit of tree offered.

Eucalyptus this time. A trunk 6ft long and 16" in diameter.

I think George said this is unpleasant stuff to turn, or am I imagining that?

Is it worth me going to get?

Cheers Paul. Seems like a tricky customer. Not sure whether to take it. Might be worth it just for the hell of it.

Hi Tom,

Remember that picture on George's wall of the wobbley stuff that Melvyn Firmager makes: http://www.melvynfirmager.co.uk/Index.html (not much of a website though  ) He uses a lot of eucaliptus. It is a pain to work and get good results but a good practice wood and good for very thin stuff - all be it stuff that will be miss shapen!

I also know that it holds a lot of water!!

Cheers,

Richard

I'm not quite sure I'm up to Melvyn's standard just yet, give me a couple of weeks. ;) I'm more thinking of practise wood.

Hi Tom,

Eucalyptus is notorious for splitting as it dries, I've seen some pieces that look like they've been attacked with an axe. I have known people to keep it in a bucket of water to stop it splitting and really turn it 'wet'.

Good luck!

Nei.

Free wood turned down? oh no!! that would never do!

quite so mrs S , my philosophy is never to turn down free wood (which explains the amazing ammount of crap i have in both my 'shop and the 'shop at work) it will always come in useful for something even if it is only using as a practice lump for a new technique , propping the workshop door open, or chucking in the log burner !

I wish I had a Log Burner!!

I turned a bit of Euca tonight. I'll post a pic tomorrow. Wet and cracks before your eyes. It didn't complain tho. Nice to learn tool technique. Will get the big log listed above to play with.

.

you ought to get one of those cheap machine mart ones to put in the 'shop - only about 60 notes ( dont buy the flu pipe from them tho as its flipping expensive - we just banged a bit of "gypsy tubing" on ours)

Hi Tom,

A wood burner would be no good for Eucalypus. You know that they plant it as a fire break in some places as it holds so much water it just won't burn!!!!!

Richard

I have tried it. It holds loads of water as already mentioned.

I tried it and even with really slow seasoning it cracked to hell. Your time would not be well spent. I would rather turn MDF and I hate the stuff.

  what sort of negative attitude is that young mark  all because it cant be roughed out

the thing with eucalypt is that you have to go with the flow a bit more than with other woods- its lovely to turn but you have to be quick and you have to be consistently paper thin. I dont get offerd it very often but when i do i really enjoy working with it and then watching it move
