I came across this Ernie Conover video where he demonstrates a bench for turning from. I may make a country cut copy.

I think sitting on a bench your more likely to be always in the line of fire, and I would have to relearn turning. I swing my body and legs with the tool to cut.

I use an 8' bench all the time, due to a deficiency to the tune of two in the lower limb department. I slide along it so I can reach my bench and bandsaw on one side and my lather and grinder on the other. It is a disadvantage sometimes, but it's a distinct advantage to learn to work ambidextrously. I find myself changing hands now without even thinking about it, even with a skew.
