Can I point out, this is a picture from another country, it is not the British Fire Service.

I was a fireman for 24 years and in that time I only met 1 other fireman who would be capable of something as stupid as this, however he was quickly promoted to Chief Fire Officer.

So the practice of promotion beyond the level of competence wasn't restricted to the Police Force!

That happens with promotion everywhere.
Think about it.
You are good at your job so they promote you.
You are good at that one too so they promote you again.
Not so good at this one so you stay there.
Everyone rises to their own level of incompetence.

I spent my whole working life working for the government, thats how I know ALL bosses are incompetent.

This is almost as bad as the Darwin award given to the 2 climbers who to tied their ropes to the tracks of a train bridge and were halfway down a long drop when a train came ...

The well known "Peter principle". Not always true of large companies, but often enough to be noticeable. Generally caused by using promotion as a reward for good work rather than have an adequate method of reward in post.

I STR some years ago a Canadian published a book about the 'principle'. He concluded that performance at work should be rewarded by increases in salary and as long as a person was doing a job well, at their particular level, that was what mattered. So the 'big bucks' would go to the people who worked the best. Money; which is the main reason we go to work anyhow, (Unless you just love your work) is the answer it seems? I think the idea stemmed from self-employed one-man bands. The better they were at their job, the more money they made. Not sure it's that simple, but there might be something in this.

This is what the Civil Service called ' fluid competency' IIRC. The idea was that experts eg scientists and engineers could be paid at a grade that reflected their expertise without having to have the managerial responsibility for an organisation ie they could work as individuals and be paid as much and hopefully more than someone with responsibility for say 30 Job Centres.

Civil Service... The two words never seem to sit beside each other very well.
I know there are bad eggs in most baskets but the Civil Service often seemed most uncivil and Service was the last thing you got from them.
Just generalising, which I know is unfair, but then nobody ever said life was fair!

Well on this thread so far the Fire Service, Police and Civil Service have been denigrated.
And we haven't touched the *ankers, Estate Agents or Call centres - but it's only early morning yet so there is still time (hammer) (hammer) (hammer)

I reserve the right to denigrate (or laud) the Police Service at my free will. I think I earned that right.
Thanks for that name Nick. I might even see if I can find it!

I was referring to the NHS. More idiots in positions of 'power' than you can shake a stick at.
Mind you, now I've retired I suppose there is one less. :)

Doesn't that apply to Gov't departments as well? Such as DVLA, IR, etc.
