Hi guys

At the moment it seems whilst i'm typing here on ukworkshops my cursor go's eratic , don't and haven't done any typing elsewhere to confirm weather it 's this site or not , more likely it's my computer but i have no way of knowing which .

While typing here on the forum i,m quite happily typing away and suddenly my cursor has jumped half way back along a line and jumbled up all my typing whilst still typing what i'm writing or it will jump up several lines and carry on typing it is so infuriating , can any one help here what may be causing this .

I should mention I have just changed to windows 7 home premium system, I had this problem with the old windows and still have it with this version 7.

anyone any ideas .hc

ps so no one else pokes fun at curser it,s now cursor, ok

I would also look at the mouse. If it has a ball, take it out and clean both the ball and the compartment in which it sits. Or try a new one. They aren't that expensive

You man eratic cursor

An eratic curser is that guy with the collection of plastic bags who stands outside Boots swearing at dogs.

hi setch

funny guy , this post is to try and solve a problem not for you to poke fun at

dave r & yo_chuci thanks, but no ball . hc

When will people learn not to try to correct spelling on forums?

Whilst I do appreciate the humour - and I genuinely think it was meant to a funny comment rather than a personal swipe - it'd be 'mean' not 'man' and it should be 'erratic' not 'eratic'.

Just double checking this for spelling now!

Nomadic cursors are always (at least, always in my experience until now) due to a faulty mouse.

Now if I could just get a wireless keyboard that didn't have keys that go on strike at the drop of a hat, I'd be happy.

hi guys

um forgive me here , my son just put his pennies worth in , perhaps i should have said earlier I'm using a lap top with a wireless external mouse instead of using the touch finger pad mouse on the laptop which is switched off (not lit) with a touch of a finger on a small icon above the keyboard , maybe i am brushing my hand over the touch finger pad for the mouse? , hmm thats interesting the icon light is out which i have assumed is off (immobilizing the touch pad) but i just placed my finger on the touch pad and the mouse moves with my finger movements press the icon so it lits up and no movement of the mouse cursor, so would the two conflict with each other maybe ??? hc.

ps steve wireless keyboard censors usually are the fault of keys not operating when they feal like it (strength of signal is very limited need to be very close and with no obstruction in the way of signal)

Head Clansman, I don't think you mentioned if you had a wireless mouse. If you have, maybe the battery needs changing or recharging. I dispensed with the built in rechargeable batteries on mine and fitted normal AA.
Just a thought.
Cheers,
Jim
Steve, I had a Logitech Wireless mouse & Keyboard for about 5 years and
they've been great. Go on, tell me that's what you've got.

i didn't mention a ball...

a laser type mouse can give the same faults if the laser etc is failing or being used on an incorrect surface...

tho now you've posted about the bit on the laptop it could also be that...

try a different mouse first.
if that does sort it look up on how to disable touchpad if external mouse being used.

lol... i saw that to and had to re-read to understand...
but it is off to corect spelling mistaks on fourums...

Just a few suggestions - not really enough info i.e. Mouse type - wireless etc, OS.
You did mention 'no ball' so I assume that this will be a optical/wireless mouse.

I assume that you use a PC with Windows - not one of those MAC thingys :D

1. Check the mouse driver in Control Panel. Some have options to move the mouse to points on the screen automatically. Probably named Snap to - or similar. If you find this option see if you can disable

2. Have a look in Device manager is there more than one mouse listed in Mice and other pointing devices?
In XP goto Control Panel / System / Hardware /Device Manager/ Mice and other devices. Is your mouse only one listed?
While you are in Device Manager are there any yellow exclamation marks next to any of the entries?

3. There is also the possibility of something nasty lurking in your system. Have you run anti adware program and anti virus recently.

4. It is of course possible that the mouse itself is faulty. If you can try it on another system to see if you get the same problem.

Hope this might be of some help

Cheers :D
Tony

EDIT: Sorry to have missed post that stated what system you are running. Should complete posts before going for a cup of tea

I've done exactly what you have described with the cursor position jumping back and typing in the wrong place on my laptop. I have not worked out what key I am pressing to make it happen but I'm sure it is down to my fat fingers pressing the wrong key combination. If I type carefully then it does not happen.

I'll check back in case you find out what it is :)

You have already mentioned it yourself, it's the touchpad. You must be brushing it with your hand. Normally with a USB mouse it will disable the touchpad when you plug it in but this one obviously isn't working properly.

Check mouse/touchpad settings in Control Panel, if it isn't in there then you should be able to download the relevant touchpad software from your laptop manufacturers website.

If the touchpad control is being switched the wrong way then as you say, it might be the mouse conflicting with the touchpad on/off switch.

HTH

I'm duly chastened re: spelling.

There should definitely be a name for the law which dictates that any attempt to be pedantic on the internet will inevitably contain at least 3 typographical errors or spelling mistakes.

Getting back on topic, if it's a wireless mouse it's very likely a battery on the way out. If it happens particularly with this site it might be an add loading and slowing down your computer, like the Sainsburys' add recently.

tis indeed this, what i took to mean that the touch pad was switched off while in fact it was still switch on while i had an external mouse connected when my hand brushed over it it activated it to move the cursor whilst i was typing, now that the touch pad is switched off all is now OK.

So ,OK I would like to thank all of those of you tried to help me with your helpful replies and comments thank you .hc

I had a twitchy cursor and finally pinned it down to the fact that I also have a graphics tablet and from time to time would leave the pen on top of the tablet..elbow..nudge..cursor twitch.

If it helps...

My Dad's computer has a wireless (bluetooth) Logitech mouse. Sometimes when he's using it the pointer wanders around the screen. Annoying.

The odd thing is, I never had a problem with my identical mouse on my laptop.

After a bit of experimenting I noticed that when the mouse was on a surface I absolutely KNEW was flat... no wandering.

It turns out that the computer stand he uses has a slightly concave keyboard and mouse shelf. When the mouse is in a particular spot it seems to lift the lazer a bit too high and it starts wandering, just like when you lift the mouse off the mat by hand.

Whether or not that's any help to you at all, I don't know, but at very least it's food for thought.
