how is this type of engraving achieved and what type of machine would be best not just for the side but also just for all types of engraving

That looks like it's been laser engraved.
Either with diode or co2 or fibre laser.

A close up of the letter might narrow it down. From the current distance, it is not obvious if the base of the letter is flat and burnt, as from a laser, or V-carved and filled, from a rotating tool.

Whatever machine it is, it would need enough Z-travel (up and down) to cope with 'flat' and 'edge' work.

Thanks I will look at these types of machines
I think the engraving is probably done on the side and then laminated together
