Having just blagged a Cherry tree out of a guy hacking a tree to pieces......really scary, just a groundworks bloke on a development with a hired in chainsaw !

Got me thinking - I've had Cherry just once, which was very tight grained and pinkish/mid brown. More usually I acquire 'English Cherry' - ornamental, much more open grained, always showing green/straw/almost red and almost black colours.

The first I'm assuming is Prunus Avium - some form of edible cherry or wild gean. The second, flowering one is a Prunus ..........?

Anyone know the ins and outs of English Cherry ?

Chris.

One commonly seen both in street and garden planting is P. 'Kanzan' ... usually recognisable by the pink flowers and branches growing at an angle of about 45deg to the main trunk.

Most commonly planted ornamental Cherry originate in Japan

My two favourites are P.'Amanogawa (Lombardy Cherry) and P. 'Kiku shidare sakura) but that's for their form and flowers... not the timber
