Hi
new to the forum could anyone suggest/recommend a cheap way to seal green wood to stop it from splitting. I’ve just acquired a large amount of ash in various diameters.
End grain sealer can be costly. Old paint or old pva glue can be used. Others melt wax and dip the ends. Anything that seals the ends will do.

Chestnut make an endseal, about £11 for a litre. I'm not sure about pva but paint is not a very good seal. I used to use aluminium primer but that probaly costs more than the end seal.
Some use an old electric frying pan to melt wax. Best done with water in the pan and the wax in another dish in the water. Direct heat may cause a fire.

Luckily I’ve got an old microwave and microwave dish, this seems to work fine. Also found using a small brush seems to work better than dipping and gets the wax into the wood fibres.
My predecessor at work left behind several large tins of hammerite metal paint, seems to be doing a great job on some cherry and silver birch that was cut last August and a hornbeam that was cut 2 weeks ago.
