Elvicta bow saw blade attachment

I've got an Elvicta bow saw (300mm blade), on it is stamped "Elvicta, Elliott Lucas, Cannock England".

How do I attach the blade to the handle? I've cut off a bit of metal from a chothes peg spring and it fits through the holes, will this work? How was it attached originally?

That or a nail should work fine.
