Have started the next elm cabinet which will be a companion piece to the one finished earlier in the year. This one is to show part of SWIMBO' fossil collection and the spec for it is as follows:

Cabinet-
Framed and panelled back and sides.
Glass panelled door with ebony opener.
Bandsawn veneered top and bottom.

The stand is a little harder to explain-
700mm tall with sculptured detailing at the top, sharper arises at the bottom.
Subtly shaped so that it will splay by about 2 or 3mm
Wide front and rear rails that will be curved with 'birds mouth' m/t joints
Cabinet to stand on two shaped cross rails dowelled into wide front and rear rail.
Two narrower side rails on each side, joints to be thru' m/t, ebony wedged and rounded, same as the last time.
Curved stretcher rail at the bottom with two side rails dovetail lapped into
the leg, joint between stretcher and rails ebony wedged m/t.

Here's a pic of a certain well known planemaker, complete with LN hat (which accompanies the LN plane brush ) slicing up a bit of elm:

One of the bits re-sawn that day was for the side panels which are shown fitted dry:

Next job is to finish the interior surfaces and then glue - Rob

Rob, I've just had a search for the first elm cabinet, and the pictures are missing from your thread. Is there any chance you could post a pic so I can see what this piece is going to be a companion to?

Here are a few pics of the first elm chest, finished in about April of this year if the grey cells are working properly:

Thanks for that Rob. I remember this piece now, it is stunning!

I can't wait to see progress on the current one.

Must admit I missed this first time around - but I won't be making the same mistake with the Second Coming, that's for sure! :D

This is a fine piece of work Rob, if the next piece is as good as this then I will congratulate you already, Keep up the good work.

Have got these two panels glued up this morning, finished all interior surfaces with two coats of matt Osmo Poly-X and some wax over the top. Glue used is slow setting Araldite which is great, I've used about a cm out a double tube. As it's expensive you only mix what's needed and there is no 'pressure' at gluing time with a slow setting adhesive...it's quite a 'normal' workshop task as opposed to the nightmare of PVA in a warm environment...very little 'squeeze out' as well:

Note also the stands for the cramps...fantastic :) . If you use Record sash cramps or similar, definitely worth making bucketful. The panels are also resting on some of the stands placed over the bar - Rob

Great chest Rob :)

I notice your stiles are over size? Do you always make up a panel like that?
It's done to give a bit of visual 'weight' to the bottom of the panel in much the same way that the card mount on a picture should be a bigger at the bottom than the top. That said, I've got about 1 cm at the bottom that I can trim at a later stage if it looks to heavy...may well trim off about 5mm in any case - Rob

Hi , any idea what make and model the bandsaw is in the first photo :?:

Its a monster . looks good to me , and I may just be looking for a new one

No it's mot mine, it's Philly's. (I'm prettier than that guy in the picture :p ) I've got the Jet JWBS-16, which I think is quite similar.
