Are these any good for driving into 18mm ply or the average hardwood?

Dreading air power as I haven't a clue about compressors

The only one I have tried is the De Walt one, 618 I think it is which is an 18V battery one. It is a great piece of kit but rather on the large side for brads. If it is for mouldings and the like you would be better off with one of the small ones that have a compressor with them. A few members on here had the B&Q one but I am not sure if that one is still available. HTH.

Various air nailer/compressor sets are available that have all the connectors and hoses you'll need, and they're generally cheaper than cordless electric ones... Also Tacwise and the likes do 230v jobbies if they'd be any use

I'd avoid the Tacwise ones, personally. I had the cordless one ('Ranger'?) and it was truly terrible - and huge; easily as big as a Paslode, and not much lighter. I have a corded Tacwise that I use as a stapler, and it's OK - but no better than OK.

I finally gave in and picked up the Spotnails version of the Maestri 21-gauge veneer pinner (does 15-30mm pins, the Maestri only does 20mm I think) and have been very happy with it. Not cheap, but far, far more reliable than the Tacwise and Rapesco pinners, as you'd expect for the money; I think I paid £170-ish a couple of years ago for mine. The only slight niggle is that it comes with a stupidly short mains lead, but that's easily changed.

HTH, Pete.

No not realy remember you are nailing through timber before you hit the 18mm wood or if its through the 18mm first you need say a 25+ long nail .
Air power is the way to go get a compressor (small one 25ltr) a connecting pipe and 'say' axminster nailer ,you can drive 18 gauge nails from 15mm to 50mm. Extra pinner does headless pins 12-20mm thats a good range and you can still purchase a stapeler if required .
You will then be set up like Norm.

I am with the others when they say that you really need airpower. http://www.screwfix.com/prods/38137/Pow ... Nailer-Kit You can buy them cheaper then this, but IMHO one thing your compressor must have is at least a 50 litre tank, because once you get used to using one, if you like it you will be able to use at least 99% of air tools on the market that need a good reserve of air, such as a spray gun.

Cheers

Mike
