Piece of small 18mm ply with a hole just big enough to wedge a pencil in vertically, let the lead poke a tiny bit out of the bottom .
The whole thing is more stable and easier to use than a compass - you keep the bottom flat on whatever your template material is and the side runs against the wall. The only bit that is difficult is right in the corners - but that is where the spiders live so hopefully no one will notice
