Hi all

i'm looking at improving dust collection in my small shop, currently its just a cheap wet and dry vac - 32mm hose where the bag cloggs quickly.

So i'm looking to either:

1) buy one of these plastic cyclones from ebay like: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121320651132
fix it to a second hand blue plastic tub like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10-PLASTI...t=UK_Pet_Supplies_Poultry&hash=item1e8aadd996

and make something like:

-minor issue with fitting the 32mm hose to the outlet which is 50mm??

2) Get a blue tub fix up something to make a simple thien separator with some kind of drain pipe bits - this I guess is going to take the longest to make what with all the circles to cut out
like post here by Grayorm: https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/diy-dust-cyclone-t69886-15.html

3) Make up a mike garnham drop box from some MDF
Like this: http://mikesaville.co.uk/woodwork/sawdust-drop-box-part-2

Anyone made any of these and recommend one over the other - costs for all three are similar-ish really once all the extra bits have been bought

thanks!

I have made a thein baffle and it was done with scrap wood a lot cheaper than £39 for a mini cyclone. Works really well

I was thinking of going down this route and then I thought for the cost of the bucket I may as well pay a little extra and get something more purpose built

I went for a cheap SIP dust exctractor and am very impressed

It's been going for a few weeks now and the drum seems to never fill! No loss in suction and it's very neat. For the price I was impressed.

Wallace - thanks that good to know, looking online there seems to be loads of designs that appear to work well

Cusimar9 - Yes i've also seen these on ebay under a different brand (also in toolstation), I was thinking that I could upgrade the vac to one of the these and keep the separator bin - this should help to keep the filter in the vac cleaner and hopefully therefore improve performance. Good to know its a good product - cheers

I've just bought a wok to turn my dust collector into a 'Jet Cyclone' collector.
Once it's fitted, I can post back what difference it's made.
If it works, it's the best £5 I've spent.

JustBen - have you got a picture of what your hoping to achieve? I can't quite picture what your plan is?

I've got both a cyclone & a Thien separator, admittedly a commercially available cyclone & a shop made Thien but I find the cyclone gives better separation.
That said the Thien cost me nothing to make & certainly separates the vast majority of the waste, so I'm happy enough with it.

Have you had chance to do this yet Ben, I'd be interested to know how you got on.
