Hi all

Does anybody else have a problem with leakage on their extractors? I've got an Axi 2200, and it seems to be prone to leakage (which is really noticeable when cutting MDF) - particularly around the point at which the metal straps clamp up.

At the moment I am resorting to taping up the bag, but this surely isn't how it's supposed to work?

Cheers

I haven't noticed a similar problem with my ADE1200 (but then, I don't tend to use that for anything other than chippings, these days). My first thought would be to try lining the aperture with some of that foam lagging/insulation for pipes. It might help, provided there's enough tolerance in the fitting of the strap for you to still be able to secure the bag in place.

Hi, Karl

Thats not right, it shouldn't do that.

I see you have had it on a tighter notch did that make any difference?

Is the filter bag clean? it might be clogged so the air has to get out somewhere. I turn mine inside out and vacuum it every now and again.

That's a good point - I haven't cleaned the filter since I got it a few months ago, and i've sucked up a lot of MDF dust in that time. I'll give it a shake down and a vac and see if that makes a difference.

Karl,

after giving it a good shake/vacuum stick it in your washing machine when swmbo isnt looking - It will make the world of difference - I wash mine monthly - and my filter bags #-o #-o

Dont tumble dry them though - They shrink!!

Tha's a braver Man than most Dodge. :)

Ah, but I have got it sussed - My wife is the clerk for our parish council so one evening per month she goes out of the house about 6.30pm and doesn't return until after 9pm - plenty of time to do the deed!!

The only cost is the bribe of a bar of chocolate to keep the kids quiet lol

Good idea Roger - Lorraine is at work on Wednesday and Thursday so i'm on child minding duties (bl00dy school holidays  ) - i'll do the deed then.

Cheers

I've worked out that I can get them washed, out of the machine and hung up to dry in the back of the van before Sarah comes home - they are then dry by the time I get back to the workshop the next morning ready to re-fit onto the machine - Simples

Good luck with you mission should you chose to accept it! lol

Mine has the same problems. Improved by sticking some thick draught excluder around the machine then clamping the bag on top but I still put gaffa tape around as well.

I wouldn't need the extractor if I stuck the bits in the washing machine. - Wife would hit me with something heavy or sharp (hammer)

Just to round this thread off, I removed the fine filter bag off the top of the extractor and, sure enough, the inside was caked in MDF dust

Quick wash and dry, and it's now back to excellent suction.

Karl, don't be fooled by the apparently rejuvenated performance. The reason you had a problem in the first place is that machine, even with the fine filter bag, just isn't suitable for MDF - the filtration level just isn't man enough for the job.
I had it's baby brother the ADE1200 also with the fine filter bag and had exactly the same problem. I used to periodically turn the bag inside out and hoover off the dust build-up. The trouble is the temporary renewal of suction results from having removed the particles trapped in the bag matrix that were actually improving filtration. Once they're gone it just affords the smaller and more dangerous stuff easier access back into the atmosphere - and your lungs!

Treat yourself to a cartridge type filter, or better still a vacuum type extractor for MDF use, and look forward to a longer and healthier retirement

Camvac 386 will do the job...triple filtration system as well so there's virtually nothing that escapes - Rob

The dust came via the t/s - the Axi 2200 is used on all the large stationery tools (p/t, spindle, t/s).

Not sure i've got room for another extractor.

I have the same problem...same machine and I know of one other person in the same situation. But mine is nowhere as bad as yours and only leaks where the band clamps together and that is fixed by taping the plastic bag to the metal.

The comment re cartridge filters is fine, up to a point, but I have found that they - like any other good cartridge - blind very quickly with fine dust...resulting in poor suction. Now there seems to be two schools of thought...one is to use a cyclone but you got rid of yours !! The other, which is the way I've gone but by no means a definitive solution is to use a Camvac for the nachines that generate fine dust like the table saw and drum sander. However I rarely use MDF.
