DUST EXTRACTOR DUCTING

Iv'e just bought and awaiting arrival of a Jet DC1100A Extractor and Filter Cartridge . And i would like to lay some ducting out around my garage with with about 4 blast gates and was wondering if you can recommend some ducting or even a video showing me a example ?
I'm thinking of 4 in clear plastic pipe at the moment .The machines i'm hoping to hook up to the extractor are { record pt 260 thickness planer }} record bs 400 bandsaw }{ record power table saw }{ mitre saw }{ bobbing sander }{ And iv'e also got a record rsde 1 extractor that i could use on it's own on the other side of the garage >> so my ducting would only be about 12 ft in total on a straight run dropping down for 4 ports with blast gates for now so any help on this matter would be mostly appreciated thank's in organisation

I don't really know any suppliers down in South wales where you are, so I can't help you there, but in terms of laying out dust extraction, and the topic as a whole, have you read Bill Pentz's site? Probably the most comprehensive site on the subject anywhere on the net, knowledgeable and helpful, but written by someone who started out as an amateur. Worth a read if you are setting up a system. There's a good section about ducting and system design which might interest you

I think 4" is insufficient for your 26cm planer.

I used spiral ducting because its cheap, some people like pvc soil pipe which is good as well. The bends on soil pipe are expensive, on spiral their cheap. If you use spiral get some of the proper foil tape, gaffer tape falls off eventually. For blast gates I made my own.

As a general rule though, 4" is too little for your main duct. It's like drinking water through a thin straw.
For a small shop, better to go with 5, maybe 6 inches.

hi mock i tried a long run of ducting similar to what your proposing and found that at the end of the run there was a big drop off in suction ive kept it to a short piece of ducting and a 2 metre length of hose and that copes with the waste from my 12 inch hammer planer ok . ive got bits and pieces of ducting hanging about left over if thats any use cheers ian

I completely agree - and that's why I posted the links to Bill's site. He says exactly the same thing, but instead of wetting his finger and sticking it in the air to estimate the airflow/pipe diameter required, he actually shows you how to calculate the correct diameter of pipe. If you want to do that, of course. My main line is actually 6in with the drops at 4in and I use d galvanised steel pipework because I have a local manufacturer who is cheap enough

If you go for bigger horizontal duct diameter it MUST be matched by an adequate airflow, fitting larger diameter without sufficient air velocity will only result in debris not being entrained in the airflow and settling out in the bottom of any horizontal ducts.

Rate of airflow is the key to moving heavy debris, big diameter horizontal ducts with an extractor of limited airflow capability won't work.
Even the Jet DC1100A may be starved if you feed 6" ducting with single 4" from individual machines.

I recently upgraded my 63mm system to the 100mm from Axi and run similar equipment to yours plus a wood turners lathe which does have a lot of shavings. One advantage of the clear piping is it is easier to see when to clean.
I achieve this by tying a chunk of cloth to a long length of string and feed it into the pipe on vacuum then withdrawing the string until all the dust and static is out. You will find debris will collect anywhere in the layout but that is easy cleaned by opening the furthest gate working back to the vacuum source.

I did the same not to long ago. It turned out much cheaper to use 4 1/2" waste pipe from the builders merchant instead of the 4" clear pipe. Axminster do adapters so it's easy enough to get back to 4" at the end of each run.

I too have just bought the DC1100 with Vortex and cartridge filter but having read Bill Penz site again went for 6" spiral pipe with a removable 90 degree bend which I bought from Ducting Online. I currently have 4.5" drain pipe but I do not think it is big enough to get the airflow. Also bear in mind the Jet is designed for 6" duct so if you step it down to 4" it is only capable of 50% of its capacity.

Hi Mock,
I have an Axminster 106 planer thicknesser connected to a Kity dust extractor (no fine filter though) via 4" pipe and it seems to work OK, but I have avoided blast gates for this job. Instead I use Axminster quick release clamps and just fit the Kity to the p/t through a short length of flex hose. I can swap it over easily to my spindle moulder so I don't lose suction by having long lengths and blast gates which might leak. I only use the Kity for these 2 though, not for fine dust.

The Startrite came off the trailer today and is now installed in my workshop (no dust extraction yet though). I hope you are happy with your new Record. I bet you had some fun getting it up that back lane !!

Should have the band saw by the end off the week they will phone me to arrangement for delivery i must confess i did tell them i was in no hurry between this dreaded flue or virus for the second time in 3 month's and to make matter's worst i'm having trouble with my bloody back roll on the summer

Iv'e just been given a flexi aluminium cooker hood venting kit to use as a ducting from my Jet DC1100A Extractor and Filter Cartridge i'm a little afraid it looks so thin and flimsy what do you think ??
And regarding my Jet DC1100A Extractor and Filter Cartridge that was delivered yesterday the filter cartridge was damaged but to be fair to ax minster i phoned them and they sent me a new one this morning and picked the damaged one up good customer service ..
And now regarding my new Record bs 400 band saw that i should be having Friday this week that i ordered with http://www.toolite.org.uk/record-bs400- ... 21759.html only to be told this evening that they cannot supply me with the band saw now until MAY refund and time to look else where ??

If used I think that the first time you switch on you will have to drag the remains from inside the extractor or however far it will reach toward the fan.
