Drill/Driver

Hi all

I NEED (definitely a NEED, I AM NOT a C@L@ECT@R) to buy a new drill/driver to replace my old Bosch workhorse and I am after some advice.

I have been looking at Makita and DeWalt. What would you recommend for working with hardwood?

Get a panasonic 15.6v drill driver if u can afford one. me work mate has one and this thing is **** good! with its 3.5 ah and 13mm chuck.

Yes, I really must get my hands on a panasonic drill - every one says they are brilliant!

I have 2 Makita 12v drills, they are fine for the workshop, and one charge lasts a long time - they pack a fair punch for their size aswell, but I would get something a bit more meaty for site use I think.

I've used a fair bit of DeWalt stuff now, and I know its used alot on TV. I've never had a problem (Although I dont own any) Alot of people say stay clear of it though. I have used their Sliding chop saw alot and LOVED it!

Metabo, are also supposed to be very good, I reviewed their little hand screwdriver (The Powergrip) - it was very good for its sixe, but not enough power for me

Oh no, I've just seen the price and I would be looking at nearly 240. Ouch.

I was hoping for a bit nearer half of that.

Makita or DeWalt then.

Hi Neil, many people do not like DeWalt but I have a 12v DeWalt cordless and can only say it is excellent. I got mine with a 1 year guantee and it was left in for service just before the year was up and it was almost fully rebuilt for me. The guy in the service centre said it did not really need anything but they changed the chuck the batteries and the charger free of charge. Ive had the DeWalt for about 3 years and no problems as yet (touch wood !!!). I think it is a case of personal preference when it is between makita dewalt metabo etc. Hope you get a good one anyway. :lol: :lol:

Neil,

The Newbury/Berkshire County Show is on this weekend - both Newbury Power Tools (DeWalt specialists) and Aldermaston Power Tools (all makes) will be there, and in the past I've bought quite a few bits of Makita kits from the Aldermaston guys at cheaper prices than anywhere else - they truly are "show special" prices.

Since you (like me) decided the Pannys were too expensive, I'd recommend you go for one of the Makitas. I've got a 14.4v model (6333DWDE - 2x 2.2Ah NiMH batteries) and an 18v model (6343DWDE - 2x 2.6Ah batteries) and they are both superb for my use. If not buying Makita then I'd look at Metabo.

Thanks for the information. Perhaps you could persuade the Aldermaston guys to show at Warwick next month.

I've made the same decision as you and I will be going for the Makita. I have the Makita biscuit jointer and it is excellent.
