Ladies and Gents,
I hope you can advise - I want to have a wee go at some VERY simple 'engraving' letters on the edge of a wooden chopping board.

Can anyone please tell me which sort of dremel tip I need?

And should I get a more expensive one (e.g. TCT), or is a cheapo good enough for a newbie?

Many thanks in advance

Greg

Fair warning: this is much harder to do than you think initially, so deffo recommend some practice before having a go on the board edge!

Just to get a feel for how it works and for light use HSS burrs will do, I struggled to wear out the first ones I bought and I was using them on hardened epoxy putties, but you can go straight to carbide without breaking the bank. Good solid-carbide burrs in small sets are available on AliExpress for less than the cost of a single name-brand burr from the usual suspects in the UK. A set of carbide ones might literally do you the rest of your life, I've used mine on hardened tool steel numerous times without any sign of wear or chipping.

The type of tip you need depends on the type of shaping you want to do, if you want to work freehand with the Dremel held sort of like a pen generally you'd prefer a ball-ended or round-tipped burr. If you want to create a V-groove you'll need to work with the drill vertical and with one of those plastic stands that screw onto the shroud (also available from AliExpress for not much).
