Hi all,

I need to make some drawers for my new kitchen and need some advice on runners. I have bought some blum 450mm under mounted blumotion runners. Having looked at the website I am struggling to understand the required depth of the drawers or whether it is even relevant. It looks as though you need to notch out the back of the drawers and the runners go passed the drawers by 10mm and sit in a groove in the back. Is this correct?

I intend to make the drawers and then plant the drawer face on it so, for example, if the drawer face is 20 mm is it correct to assume that you would set the runners back 20mm and make the drawer 440mm.

Sorry if this is not making sense but as I say I’m struggling to get my head around it. Anyone out there with experience of these?

Yes Kev the runner does go past the rear of the drawer box by 10mm, so you must allow this clearance at the rear. The length of the runner is from the back of the drawer front to the back of the 10mm 'extra' If you are planting on the drawer front and it is an inset front then you must minus the thickness of the drawer front and the inner front from the total length. I hope this is clear enough as it is difficult to explain but easy to show.

Hi Kev

It is along time since I have fitted Blum runners as I have found a product I like better, but I never ran a groove in the back of the drawers, all you have to do is once the runners are in the cabinet push the drawer box on to them, the metal spike at the back will mark the drawer and then drill a 6mm hole to fit it.

You need to make sure your runners are square to the cabinet front and level with each other, I use a jig made out of 6mm MDF with a piece of wood screwed to the front which sits against the cabinet front and then I mark out the hole positions on the MDF so that all the pilot holes are in the correct place ( I normally just put 2 holes in at first). Remember to allow for the thickness of the drawer front though as it is really annoying when you forget.

You will need to notch both back to clear the runners and front for the locking device of the draw and drill a 5mm hole in the back for the lug on each runner.

The drawbox should be the nominal runner length less 10mm, internal width of drawbox should be carcase internal dim less 42mm
