Anyone here made a jig that can compete with the well known proprietary joint cutters?

Have a look at http://www.stots.com/ and look at the STOTS jig maker. I used one to make a jig 3.5ft long for dovetails laid out unevemly.

If you're considering hand cutting I can highly recommend Dave Barron's (I think that's his name) little jig. £20 at Yandles and I can't believe how easy it makes hand cutting.

I'd virtually given up on hand cutting ('cos I was crap ) but this jig makes me want to go and play at making them. Transformed my approach for sure (and I own a Leigh!).

Yep - fantastic bit of kit.

Couldn't believe how tight he made dovetails in such a short space of time.

Yes that looks very good, needs a depth stop tho, those japenese saws cut down fast.

Have you had trouble adapting to the pulling of a saw as opposed to pushing DW. I haven't, but I've come across some people who say they simply can't adapt to them?

Hi I have three dovetail jigs and use none of them. I made this jig and use it all the time.

The jig helps you cut the housings, the tails being cut first and used to mark out the housings. I cover the area with masking tape, mark out with a knife and peeling away the areas to be cut away. The housings being cut away freehand with a router, going cutting as much as possible.

It is then a very easy job to cut to the line with a chisel and the end result I found is always very good.
