Hi

as per my last post, i will be making a display box to hold some paralympic medals. The thing i need to sort out first is how to 'sit' the meddles securely inside the box but be able easily take them out for people to wear when having photos taken.

The box will have a solid lid made of some sort of timber that i haven't chosen yet. Then when you open the lid it will have glass protecting the medals which will then be removed to gain access to the medals. The medals have ribbon on aswell so this needs to be taken into consideration.

Do i use some sort of hard foam that is then covered with some material, say velvet? It must be hard wearing as the medals will be 'in and out' the box fairly often but again, the medals have to be stable enough

great, cheers for that. I'll be having a look at the site that he used for the flock for sure.

Think the main problem i have is holding the medals securely whilst being moved around. Someone at work suggested pins to hold them but they would be fiddly when it comes to removing them for people to hold etc

no i don't, am very new to all this. have only been working in a joinery for 14 months now but learning fast.

So what is sketchup? And interested in the design you have. Need all the help and advice i can get

Cheers :)

Yorkie,
Here I have used velvet on a thin layer of foam, on top of board, to keep the items static I use small pieces of double sided tape, rather like stamp collecting inserts.

Sketchup is a free design package from Google. Check out DaveR's posts on the Design forum.

Here is a possible design for your medal box, sizes are approximate as I used 75mm for the medal dia. The lid keeps the medals secure when closed. This is a first thought but it could be revised to provide a "two-tier row. The ribbon is laid in the recess behind the medals.

thanks for the info, i'll have a look at the package tonight and see what its all about. Easy to use i take it?

Interesting method of keep the medals secure, hadn't thought of that

Yes it is easy to use, not quite intuitive if you have used one of the more traditional design packages like TurboCad, but I prefer it. Download it and have a go, you can have the medal box skippy file if you pm me.
