I want to clean up my Dewalt DW745 table top, does anyone have any tips on doing this or have done it themselves?

Cheers

What is it made of and what is the issue with it currently?

I believe they are a pressed aluminium. I just wanted to tidy it up and give it a wax to help pieces glide over it better.

Shoot me down but how about taking your largest plane (if you have one) winding the blade up or removing it, sticking on wet and dry paper to the sole of the plane and sanding the surface of the top?

Depending on how scratched to top is as to how fine a grit you want? How about 240 before going to 400 then 600.

I'm no expert to take with a barrel of salt!

Cheers James

I would start with a magnet (even a fridge magnet) and see whether it is aluminium or steel/cast iron. If it is aluminium, does it have a coating on it? This came up a few weeks ago and the kity does have a coating on it.

If it were mine, I would look to see if any scratches have displaced metal above the surface and remove anything that has. Aside from that I would just wax it and move on. If it is uncoated aluminium, you could work through the grits and make it shiny but waxing will make the biggest difference.

The DW745 already has a low friction coating on it’s die cast aluminium top. Clean with mild detergent and a nylon scourer then wax and buff off.

Agree with Richard. For coated aluminium it is very damaging to use an abrasive. It rips off the coating and will hasten corrosion.

Clean with detergent, or meths is also OK. If there are any projections these could be removed with a flat stone, used gently.

Then wax and buff. Almost any wax will do but I prefer beeswax or microcrystalline.

Ok thanks. Can you recommend how to fill in any nicks or would you just leave it? They don't affect the performance i just wanted to tidy it up.
