As I mentioned on another thread that Wizer was not to look at....

A desk blotter with an inset 6d. The semi circular part is inset into the rectangular piece - routed out and squared with a chisel. The knob is threaded into the body, using the 1 inch tap and die set. It's American Black Walnut. Not as nice as home grown, but I actually went into John Boddy's looking for Yew for it, but they had NONE! Very little else that interested me either, apart from the exhorbitantly priced exotics. No way I can afford a small log for £80 or so.... plus VAT.....
Sorry for no pics in progress - launched into it without a thought......

I can supply a sixpence of most dates for a reasonable fee..... but remember the last is dated 1967. Silver 3d pieces are very neat too.

That looks very effective. Love it ! 8) 8) 8)

ABW is real nice stuff ... up there as one of the fave's for me ( recently did this wee fella....): -

British Walnut is my favourite of all for turned pieces.
Its gorgeous :D :D :D

Nice work,both of you :D
I like ABW,nice colouring, easy to work - never been able to get hold of any English walnut yet :( (think Chisel's got it all.. )

Yes I am also a fan of Walnut

Both pieces are lovely. I like the inset coin, really makes a piece special.

Next time I'm in past where I get my blanks, I'll see if there's a nice piece for you Andrew... There's usually some there -- if so, I'll 'snaffle it' and send it down.
Will be there in the next week or so... once the snow shifts ( it arrived today ! )...

and a bit for Paul too. :p :p

:) :) :)

Thats very nice, as is Jenx bowl,

How is the blotting paper held on the base ? ( just re-read, i assume the base is only a snug fit into the rectangle, and paper is snagged by this. )

Is the thread tapping somthing tha would require some tuition, or could anyone pick it up ?

,how does the AW compare/turn to the British Walnut :?:

Maybe it's this particular piece, but I found it quite dry with fairly open grain.
The thread didn't cut very well, ruined one piece. Then had to adjust the cutter in the die to cut progressively deeper. Not ideal, but functional.

Exactly so.

Thats a lovely piece Nick and the coin sets it off a treat, its a great way to personalise something with a birth year coin, I can see where it would make something much more special to the recipient.

Jenx (and for that matter everyone else)why don't you put more of your stuff on in its own right? I love to see what others have been making, it all helps to inspire everyone else who looks IMHO :D

Apologies Johnny, you're right.. I must have appeared to have slightly Hijacked Nick's thread... got a bit carried away with the liking for ABW !
( Sorry Nick ! 8) )

Probably ( and I never really thought about it much TBH... ) because I don't feel its anywhere near of a standard yet to be of much interest.
But I'm learning :p
For inspirational stuff.. Mark Hancock's, Cornucopia's, Chas', Bodders, Andrew, Tam, Paul, John B, Duncan ,Richard Findlay, etc etc.. ( list goes on to quite a length.. ).. now THAT is inspirational ! :)

But back to appreciating Nick's blotter.. which is indeed to be appreciated, Its great ! 8) 8) 8) 8)

Then you feel wrong IMHO ,everything(almost) is worth seeing,it all gives us ideas and its always good to see different peoples approaches to similar objects. I put loads of the old tat I make on here and find that peoples suggestions and comments really get me thinking about the next one :) When I look at others work, same thing, even(on the very rare occasion) when you think to yourself "I wouldn't have done it like that" you've still learnt something. So don't be shy stick em on :D

Hey wheres my name? (only jesting, my 'L' plates are still well and truly on)

Sorry to wander off the topic of your excellent blotter Nick

That is a really neat idea Nick, and some nice work. Have you left the base a push fit, or does the screw go through to the curved base?

Nick I have been looking at the Blotter on and off since I saw it this morning, basically trying to sum up why it seemed so "Right", I have come to the conclusion that it is not just the proportions but your choice of wood, the Walnut has that silky smooth texture that lends itself to clearly defined lines. Having visualized it in various woods I have closeted away I can only think of pau rosa or bubinga that would give me the same impression.

The knob screws into the curved base. Tightens it up and traps the blotting paper.

just clicked on your thread Nick... luv it, simple appeal = max appeal :!:
