Just had a skim thru, will print and read later, - Some inspiring pictures, looks again a great reference text.

I'm wondering when the book is out ?

Fantastic work Phil. I really am interested in this side of woodworking lately.

Ok, got to get this off my chest......and I would imagine there's a debate and a bit of slapping round the head coming.......

what a load of old tosh, arty farty nonsense.

Ok - I've said it now, save me grumbling to the computer.

Purely personal and my sincere apologies to Peter if he's offended and I hope he doesn't take it personally. It's very well put together, photographed and everything else. And I'm not going to go into a long discussion defending my point of view, I just think turning should be more instinctive from the individual turner and,.....oh well....feel better now.

Grumpy Chris.

Thanks for the comments.

Scrums I'm sure 'Peter' won't be offended at all! Your comments may well be reflecting the views of the silent majority of turners. I have respect for your point of view and your right to express it. Can't please everyone I guess but I'll keep trying.

Phil

Like Chris I probably wouldn't go as far as you do Philip but your ideas do make me think and klook at things differently so for me there is value evenwhere I don't agree or like your ideas.

Pete

What is it you don't agree with Scrums? Is it the type of turning/art or the way the article is written?

Phil,

Looks like some interesting ideas, you've certainly come up with some good shapes, although personally I'd be a bit lost about how to implement some of the ideas.

I can also see Chris's point of view though. Personally I quite like to "let the wood have a say in what it gets to be" (whatever nonsense like that might mean). I might even argue that it's all just a different perspective on much the same thing. They are cool shapes though. :D

Cheers,

Dod

I must admit that it has made me think more about shape and design.
This i think is because i feel more confident with the lathe and the tools.
Whereas before, being a relative beginner i was more concerned with getting things right with what i was doing with the tools to start with.
I think it just shows how you can look at things when your confidence grows with the lathe and your own work.

Thanks to those who have provided comments and feedback. There seems to be a mixed reaction to these publications and perhaps to posting links to them here which is understandable. I am not attempting to persuade turners to turn 'my way' or impose my views, I was hoping it would be seen as an exercise in adding to a body of knowledge.

Much of what appears in this section is about practical skills, application, difficulties etc., sometimes it may be helpful for some to have theory added to the mix.

Often there are requests here for critiques and what I am trying to do is assist turners to view their own work and practice critically. Theories, ideas and good design apply equally to functional as well as the more arty approach. If anyone has suggestions of subjects they may wish to see covered let me know either here or by mail.

The next one I am now working will cover the basic principles and elements of design and will offer practical ways to help understand and apply these using proportional grids.

Best wishes
Phil

Downloaded and reading.

Can't do nowt else just now, 'er indoors has passed on this 'orrible bug that is goin' around.

Have also been threatened by her that if she catches me in the garage, I'll have the housework to do for a week. Wouldn't you stay indoors?

Keep talking, writing and posting Phil. If we ever end up as a forum where everyone turns out the same shape bowls and only does 'normal' things will be the time I leave. My only greviance is that whilst I know that there are a number of people on here that turn miniatures, off centre work, etc we tend to not see many examples. Also little in the way of decorated work. I suspect that many of us have done wierd, freaky things but been shy of showing them in case people criticise too much.
