Hi Folks,

Gave the deep rimmed shallow bowl another go. This one's made from spalted beech and measures 130mm by 42mm, finished with friction polish.

Lee it's fantastic to see your progression. Every piece improves upon the last. You are learning very quickly.

This is a nice piece. If I can offer constructive criticism, I would have like the curve of the bowl to be more acute, to lift it from it's base. At the moment it looks somewhat 'dumpy'. Also you did something I used to do early on which I never noticed until it was pointed out to me. You have sanded the transition between rim and bowl so as to loose it's definition. Next time, sand up to each edge with your lower grits and only slightly soften that transition with your higher grits. You'll be surprised what a difference it makes to the look.

Keep it up! ;)

A agree Tom, when I was sanding the edge between the rim and the bowl I kept thinking I shouldn't be rounding over the the sand paper, DOH!

You can clearly see the diff with the outer edge of the bowl which I intentionally left sharp and crisp. Think the piece would have been more unified with the same sharp edge in the inside bowl edge.

Next time i'll get it sorted, bring it on!!! LOL.

:D :( :D :(

Must say I agree with Tom here Lee, in terms of you learning and the shape of the bowl. You are producing some fantastic work, I particularly like the fact you’ve kept this piece nice and chunky- the finish looks good. Look forward to seeing the next!

Nice one Lee.

I think Tom's comments are spot on and constructive. I like that piece though normally I am not a fan of the chunky look.

Hi Lee

It is good to see you progressing and this is clearly evident. You are aware of how to refine this piece next time you make one as discussed above.

The wide rim bowl is one of my favourites as it opens up a canvas to play around the rim. This can been seen in Philips Streeting's latest bowl.

Someting which is also worth looking at is the inclusion of an item within the bowl. Such as a sphere which is either a total contrast to the rest of the bowl or to compliment a part within the rest of the bowl/rim.

IE you have a nice inclusion on the rim which looks a bit lost. I say this as the rim of the bowl/rim has been rolled/sanded over as has been discussed. This means that the eye can not decide if the inclusion should continue ino the bowl or stay on the rim. So sharp definition on the bowl rim when you have inclusions like this can help.

By including a sphere which is the same colour as the inclusion can add a point of interest and connect the two together.

Pebbles of contrasting colours, and other media can be placed inside of the bowl to add interest.

I have included Philips web link if you are not already aware of it. Well worth looking at and there are wonderful examples that make us re-think what a bowl should represent.

keep up the good work.

Lee, fantastic job on this deep rimmed shallow bowl, despite this kind of bowls are not my favorites.
You've got already from other members enough constructive comments, take your advantage with these comments.
You have talents!!

Mornin' Lee

Nice bowl there Lee.

As Tom said

You have sanded the transition between rim and bowl so as to loose it's definition. Next time, sand up to each edge with your lower grits and only slightly soften that transition with your higher grits. You'll be surprised what a difference it makes to the look.

The turning recess is still there, so you could take another smidgen off the inside to sharpen up the transition.

Cheers

Dave

Yep, makes a big difference. Much nicer. It's a keeper.

Can I make another suggestion

Your pics are a little on the large size. I'd suggest a width of around 640px

You should be able to do that somewhere in your Photobucket settings.

Hi,

Started doing this when posting on WOW Tom (got a bit of a ticking off!) , so I'll start adopting it as a standard on here too. 800x600 is a good enough size.

I agree but that last one is 1,024px × 768px. If you are using photobucket you can either post thumbnails for people to click to a larger picture from or edit it's size.

Pete

800 will still cause some people to side scroll. 6-650px is the max I think.
