Once upon a time you could only get very basic mortice chisels and bits if the machine would only take 3/4 shanks; which then required lots of work to get them to cut :( . Today the axminster summer sale flier arrived and they now stock Japanese pattern mortice chisels and augers with a 3/4" shanks :D . If this is old news I apologise.

I bought the set of Axminster 3/4" cheapos when I first bought a mortiser - the 12mm chisel split (!) so replaced it with an Axminster TIN cheapo.

I noticed too that the current catalog has 3/4" Japanes pattern expensive versions, and I'm wondering what you get for around 4-5X the price. I've got 7 room doors to do each with 12 mortices so am not averse to throwing money at the problem - if it is a problem

Hi,

The japanese chisels are made from better steel and, most importantly, have their inside corners squared instead of the chaper ones which have them rounded. So they offer much less resistance while plunging into the wood.

Tim I gather they are rather good, its about time there was something resonable with 3/4" shanks.

I have been mulling over investing in one clico chisel, but can't decide which size to go for, they are favoured by cabinetmakers

....well that is what the add says.

Tony - I think the Clico chisels are valid if the machine is going to be set up to run all day in a production 'shop. I think the Jap tools would be a better investment for infrequent use...at least my use would be infrequent - Rob

according to the axminster catalogue the japanese patern are designed more for working in softwoods , they suggest english patern if you are working in hardwoods.

Which patern is chosen should have no bearing on the steel quality as both are equally expensive , and fabricated from the same metal - the key is to buy the expensive ones rather than the cheap sets

I dont think the english ones come with a 3/4" shank.

you're right they dont - but then the expensive japanese pattern ones dont either

from the axminster site, here http://www.axminster.co.uk/product-Clic ... -23124.htm

The chisel shank diameters on both Japanese and English types are either 13/16" (20.6mm) or 1.3/16" (30.2mm), depending on the size of the chisel,

i guess you folks are talking about these http://www.axminster.co.uk/product-Axmi ... 784456.htm which do but these are axminsters own , not clico , and therefore are arguably not of the highest quality steel etc

These Jap chisels are significantly better than the chinese set which were about £15 for 3. I had some, see my first post because they were the only chisels with 3/4" shanks. Now the better Jap chisels are available in both shank sizes, which is what I was posting about.
