Day to day cleaning/polishing of danish Oil finish?

Hi All,

Have just finished an Iruku table for the other half, the finish is Danish Oil (6 coats)

She has asked me what she can use to clean\polish it? It's only a small table but would not be happy to have to sand it back down and refinish if she used the wrong stuff.

Any ideas on what to use?

To clean use a cloth dampened with warm water, perhaps with a little dishwasher detergent added. Dry off with either a clean dry cloth or paper towels. Nothing else is needed, although given time the polish will probably degrade leading to a need to clean and degrease with something like white spirit scrubbed in direction of the grain, either applied with a cloth or perhaps OOOO wire wool or something like Scotchbrite or Mirka fine finishing pads for more thorough cleaning, then buffed off with a dry cloth or paper towel, followed by an application or two of fresh Danish oil.

General advice is to not allow liquid spillages to sit because they'll cause damage to the finish if left long enough, which will lead to a more involved refinishing job. Wipe up spillages as soon as possible. Apart from that, that's it, but bear in mind that Danish oil is not the most durable finish in any case and will almost certainly need freshening up every now and then. How frequently this is needed will depend on the usage of the piece and its exposure to things like UV light, etc. Slainte.

I'd buff a few coats of wax on top, repeat monthly for a few months and then as needed over time. This will build up a hard protective surface over time and is dead easy to maintain.

Yes, I use Antiquax (UK) at home, or Anciens Ebenistes (France) wax in the workshop for the initial coats. I think the French wax' solvent is turpentine- it has a pudding-like consistency. The antiquax is a hard paste wax. Both waxes smell terrific!

I used 3 coats of Danish Oil on the video case I built in the late 90s, all it gets is a light dusting, it has not been touched other than that. See last post in this thread: post935299.html#p935299
