i'm in the process of making a small chess set in the odd spare minute, i'm making the white pieces from cedar but need a darker wood for the other set. in the past, the wood of choice would have been something like ebony but i want to steer clear of endangered species. any ideas?

Hello,
if you do not want to use exotics, have you considered using oak and then dying it black with vinegar and wire wool solution............it turns very black and quickly, but still shows the grain pattern through the colour.
Not to everyone's taste I know, but it works.

I have done a chess set in Holly and Labernum which worked quite well.
Any chance of a piccy or 2 Ken,as this is on my to do list.

thanks for the help, i think i will go with walnut. i did think about holly, as my wood is completly overgrown with it!. But then i saw some cedar sitting in the log shed and thought it would make the workshop smell a bit better!
