Sanding sealers are the least 'darkening' of any of the 'finishes' in my experience.BUT I think you will find Everything will darken the apparent colour due to the enhanced contrast due to change in light reflection and lack of scatter.Try Water or Plain Wax on your samples and I believe you will see much the same darkening effect.
