Dakota chuck?

Has anyone used this chuck or know anything about it?
http://www.rutlands.co.uk/cgi-bin/psProdDet.cgi/XT700 I am in two minds about the purchase of one. At the moment I have a Record collet chuck and it has seen better days so was thinking of upgrading. I am not a woodturner as such but do use the lathe occasionally usually for spindle type of work. :?

They have been mentioned a few times in the forum and seem to have a reasonable reputation. If you are only using the lathe on a casual basis they are probably good value. Make sure that you get the right thread size for your lathe.

I am sure there is someone on here who bought one but can't remember who, hopefully they will see this thread and get back to you

It doesn't 'feel' as well made as my Record RP4000 but at half the price I reckon it was a bargain... just one fellah's perception....

Well thansk for the quick reply guys. Graham I have seen your work and know you are a true turner. I am confident in your opinion of the chuck so think I will go for one. At just a tad under £70 it has got to be worth it. As i stated I do not use the lathe a lot and most of my work is spindle work but now and then I turn knobs which I use the chuck for so wold be bonus for me. Many thanks guys. Should be fine for a novice like me. :wink:

mailee, although they are rather a high price in comparison to the chuck and standard jaw set you might consider a set of the smaller jaws for such as your knobs and the like.

Check with Rutland to see if the package includes any jaws extra to the standard one... I seem to remember that mine included a pin jaw set...

I don't need the pin jaw set but if you do then they're available to you for a donation to Cancer Research plus postage

I bought one of those chucks when they were on offer before and find it great for my novice turning, I also bought the small set of jaws for my toy work,
Having said that I don't have experience of other chucks to compare,

It has an indexing ring on the back and the gearing is enclosed,

The only thing I found iffy was the length of the screws holding the jaws they seemed short and I managed to strip the thread on one so I bought some longer screws from a local stockist,
