Hi all

I need to extend the dado rail in my hallway due to having the electric meter moved and replace a bit that's missing. I have trawled the local yards/sheds and surprise surprise cannot find the match. What I need to extend is MDF to my surprise so didn't think it would be that old, I've lived here for 7 years.

Anyway I asked about getting some run out to match. I need about 2.5 metres and its quite small. I was told it would be 80 to 100 pounds, which sounds steep. What do others think of the price or can anyone suggest somewhere else local for me to try. I'm in north Surrey by M25 junction 11.

The obvious other solution would be to replace the whole lot. Materials would be much cheaper but my time to take old off, put new on, make good and decorate makes this even less attractive to me

Thanks in advance for any replies

Oh and I don't care if the new stuff is MDF or wood as it will be painted

Mark,

If you post the profile someone on here may have a bit or even be prepared to make you some, worth a try. :)

The fact that they will most likely have to grind a cutter to match plus the time setting the moulder up for a short length is what will bang the price up so just hope that someone on the forum can help.

Good luck

Hi,

Make your own! I had to make some architrave and skirting for my sister-in-laws victorian house, with the help of a table saw, planes a scratch stock I had matching ones done in no time. try and make some from wood, get some straight grained pine. Or replace all on the room with something similar, no one will notice a slight difference in different rooms.

I recently had a similar problem and simply made my own.
If you lack moulding planes to do the job try a router, by careful choice of cutters quite intricate mouldings can be produced.

Roy,

Thanks guys

Unfortunately I have no idea how to post the profile of the moulding, my computer skills are rock bottom.

Dennis
Yeah I guessed at that price they would be making moulder blades. I was hoping there would be some computer controlled machine whereby the profile is loaded and universal cutters are employed to machine the profile. Or do I live in a dream world?

As for making my own, I'm after a quicker fix than that, I really don't have the time and am not convinced how good a job I could do.

Basically I know this is expensive for what it is, but do members think this will be the going rate for a piece of moulding run out. Or does anyone know or a magic machine as described above?

Mark

Have you tried Champions (Sutton, Shannon Corner on the A3)? They did some moulding work for me a while back and it wasn't that expensive - which is not to say that it wouldn't be now, of course. They also have a good selection of traditional dado rails.

Or you could do what I found in one part of our house - mould it out of putty and paint over it...

There is no magic machine (beyond a cutter grinder) and that seems a good price (the knives would cost most of that, retail).

The only other approach is to see if you can create the profile by buying otwo or more other profiles and glueing/ pinning them together to make the profile you want.

regards
Alan

Lets start with the basics; do you have a digital camera (including a phone, if it's 2 Mp or more) ?

In general, internet forums are much more fun if you can "do" pictures, so it's a trick well worth the learning.
