Very skilfully done but it's now a rich man's plaything, not a working tool. I'm out.

I've contacted him (curiosity) and he states he made it for decorative rather than user status, maybe a retirement present - to which I said for that money I'm pretty sure the recipient would MUCH prefer several good usable planes. $1,800 could get you a lot of tools.

You are correct, his reply was... colourful, the usual BS about how america is better, won WW2 single handed (apparently) and steamrollered the brits into the sea in their fight for independence also single handed (the french spanish and dutch being there just for the spectacle).

Dunno how my simple remark begat the other but there we go. I merely meant I thought the market he was trying to "create" in a essentially purely decorative hand plane was going to have a very limited market.
