I had an idea as to how to make a small box without having to get the middle out! Bamboo with an ebony lid and bottom. It turned out really well. Well I think it did anyway. It was a little gift to a friend who does a lot of needlework and loves things Chinese. The charcter says 'needle', I couldn't fnd the plural

I really like what I can see of it. Have you got better quality pic? Looks like you've enlarged a small pic

Cor blimey Greggy, I din fink a vat. A s yeh  . I karnt fine a s in chyknees?

The ebony was another pressy from the guy that gave me the pinch chucks I showed in another thread. Beautiful to turn 8) and a chocolaty smell with it similar to black American walnut.

I think that the top looks bigger thatn it actually was due to the perspective of the photo. I must remember that for future?

Oh yeh I like that. Floats my boat. I take it you burned the symbol in? Where did you get the bit of bamboo from?

Neat bit of thinking !

Tom, I guess you could use ( i.e. cut up ) one of those bamboo wind-chimes that seem to be everywhere !
.. I have one somewhere which doesn't get used, and you could have a tube , if you wanted to make a similar box ( let me know if needed  )

I think you've pulled off the 'oriental theme' very well !

Excellent ! - did you do the pyrography yourself too ?
:D :D :D :D

Yes the symbol is pyrographed on. The bamboo was left with the house when we bought it, but it probably came from a garden centre. I have a little left and am going to have to look for more. What I have is the perfect size for my Axminster chuck..

All that the hole needs is sanding to get a paper like layer out. A shoulder on each end and the bits to fit.

I love doing the pyrography. Very satisfying!

I have a pyrography iron, and have yet to attempt anything with it..
It 'scares' me a little to be honest.. not the thing itself, but the (almost inevitable ) ruination of a piece that would almost certainly happen ! :p
-- I should bit the bullet and try it .. after all, whats the worst that can happen ? a bit of wood gets spoilt... so you have inspired me to give it a go sometime soon :D

Your mouse is brilliant 8) 8) 8) 8)

Thank you, I love doing it!

My pyrography pen is the low voltage ype with a wirw 'knib', bent bit-a-wire, in it. It's much more adaptable and you can change the heat in n nstant when you are doing patterns. I have never used the type with the solid bits, but I have seen some really nice stuff produced whit them. I turned my own pen because I found the one with the kit a bit too bulky. Now it's just what I need.

This is one of my favorite wedding presents. I have made about 3 sets similar to this.

I made the gouge to do the captive rings. I thought the bought ones were just toooo expensive!

Lovely work. Great to see things like this ... I like very much also the things JohnB has done, 'awards' for people and things ...

We are fortunate I think, that not everyone want to have 'mass-produced trash' from the 'Argos' type mentality ( Sorry to single Argos out, but that is a good example of what i mean.. ) ....
Its heartening to know that people still appreciate one-off, hand made top quality things. Perhaps ( and I don't know this for sure... ) it may even be a trend that is growing ?

Truly wonderful to see. - Love it 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

Brilliant selection of turning.

It's when I see someone with (and no offence to all the CL1 owners out there!)
a relatively low powered 1/3 horse lathe producing such beautiful work that I realise that
instead of sitting at the PC dreaming of updrading to a 3HP varispeed monster,
I should be in the shed learning TECHNIQUE!

Superb.
