Courier collection Service for Band Saw

As a newbie to the woodturning world I am trying to get hold of various machines to populate my workshop and it would appear that the majority of the kit advertised is up North and as a sissy southerner, they are way out of my travelling zone. Does anybody have any helpful advice about courier collection services as i notice several adverts mention this but i have never used that type of service before.

Grateful for any advice offered, as long as the response is anatomically possible !

I don't know what size of bandsaw you're looking for, and I don't know if this applies to smaller bandsaws - but for bigger saws, have the seller remove the table. The trunnions under the table are a weak point and often get damaged in transit. And it lowers the centre of gravity - which helps keep a tall thin machine from falling over.

Also, expect damage. Chances are your machine will get home safely, but there are plenty horror stories out there (refer to one of Wallace's recent restoration threads, where a big mortiser was bounced on the road and seriously damaged right in front of him).

Try www.shiply.com . They send a request out to carriers and you get quotes via email. Mate got a huge industrial fridge from Cornwall to Inverness for £40-00. Also if its heavy or awkward get the seller to put it on a pallet.

there's a firm I think called ladylift or similar that specialises in moving machinery for the DIY man.....well used to bad driveways and awkward workshop access......
not heard anything bad about them...
worth a try

Buyer beware ! A few years ago( mebbe 5 or 6) I bought a pillar drill on that auction site. I arranged for 'Shiply Transport' to pick it up. I got a phone call from ST saying they could not transport it ' because it was bare metal'.

I still had to pay full cost quoted because they had shown up.
I was really ticked off, and won't buy owt now unless vendor gives p+p cost.

Paisley freight get good reviews on cycling forums for transporting bikes which are at least as vulnerable as machine tools.

Shiply are a broker iirk.

I recently sent a table saw from Devon to Scotland and used a company called P4D. The saw was already on a pallet, so I just had to label it and used a load of polythene wrapping to hold the fence which was in a separate box to the pallet. Cost was £140 + VAT to send it, which the purchaser paid for.
