Long story, short. We now need wardrobes in our bedroom where we didn't when it was decorated. It's the newest finished room, so putting old scrappy ones in isn't really an option. But I'm having a blank on the design. I'm going for a modern painted look. I can't work out how best to deal with this 101 degree corner:

Is it just 2 carcases with one disapearing into the corner with a rail going into it?

Or is there a better way?

Tips on cabinet construction would also be appreciated. Could do with out this at the moment, would like it done as quick as possible.

Wizer

The easiest way would be to bring the short angled cupboard out square off the long one and either make a wide end for it or use a filler piece to close the gap to the wall.

Let me know how you cut your wood to 3 decimal places will you? :)

On a much more constructive note, consider hanging the middle door the other way round. I think you stand a serious chance of one fouling the other the way you have it there.

thanks guys.

Steve, the doors where just roughly drawn. Hadn't really though that far ahead yet. Just trying to visualise the best way to construct the corner.

Dennis, that's got me thinking. How about squaring the front but still having the back angled to make use of the space.

Wizer

It depends if you are having backs in them,as if you are it would be quicker and easier to build them square to each other and lose a little space, but if you are not having backs in then it is a case of personal preference, you could still build both units square to the walls and have a filler piece in the front corner between the two units, the construction of this corner would however depend on wether the smaller unit had an end in or not.All good fun when you have a house that is not square as you also found with your greenhouse.

Are you sure you want to fit the corner? It seems to me that you will effectively loose 600mm to gain 780mm, I know you can store stuff in the corner but it's so hard to get it out you may as well chuck it in the loft.

yeh I see what your saying. It's an awkward shaped room. This is the best position in the room really. I'll have to consult the boss.

There is something else you could consider, Wizer, although you might have to alter the size of the central doors.

You could make the unit as three cabinets (I'm building a a bedroom storage cupboard myself at the moment) and hinge the centre door to one of its neighbours. That would give you access to all the volume of space in the centre. Our kitchen corner cupboard is constructed that way and it works very well.

yes I see what you mean Steve.

What about something like this:

Just using the corner unit for mostly folded stuff on shelves.

I would agree with Steve that the door sizes need looking at, however, I find doors hinged off doors on wardrobes a little clumsy for my liking. Personal preference only though.

I think that has distinct possibilities, Wizer. You could mount you rail across at an angle and have loads of room in the corners for all that other stuff that gets consigned to the wardrobe that doesn't have a home anywhere else.

thanks. These wardrobes are just for my clothes, so not much. SWMBO has a whole room for her clothes!!

Just had a chat with the missus. Seems like I was over complicating things! Speed is of the essence. So I'm going with this

Much simpler and still gives us enough space.

Just need to design them now!

Thanks guys.

Watch out for your cabinet sizes with regard to practicality. 600mm is just about the lower limit for the internal depth if you want to hang stuff on coathangers and get the doors shut.

I made built in's in our old house but this was along the far bedroom wall where the chimney breast was. but had hanging rails from front to back some were double one above the other seem to get more hanging space! plus cupboards above.

This is what we will have in our current house.

The wife always comments how she would love to have had the wardrobes come with us or may be she is hinting?

easiest way is a couple of full hieght sliding doors with the nearest end closed off and the other end meeting the wall.

Sliding doors take no floor space to open so save room.

Also they are a doddle to fit . one runner on the floor, one up top (top one can be attached to the shelf units - next - with a filler to the ceiling). Then I would make a floor to ceiling shelf unit each end , attached to the wall, with a hanging rail in between, and maybe a shelf below for shoes.

no more than a short days work including fitting !

Done a few jobs with sliding doors. They are very light and easy to fit,so if you want speed they may be the way to go.
