I recently bought a cordless laser mouse (Microsoft's Wireless Laser Mouse 6000) because I liked the feel of it. I'd previously used their infra-red corded jobbie, which had no problems at all with my desktop (a textured pattern vinyl).

However, this new version didn't like the desktop at all - the cursor would stop as I stopped, then shimmy or jump about 5mm - a right nuisance when trying to draw something, as you can imagine.

Anyway, I had an idea, so I drew an A4 page-worth of lines in both directions, 1mm apart. Didn't take forever, in spite of how it sounds and it has totally solved the problem.

So, if you've got a similar mouse, with a similar problem, unless you can be bothered to draw all the lines as I did, drop me a PM and I'll e-mail the grid to you - no point in more than one of us spending time mindlessly drawing straight lines! :)

My experience with optical mice is that they are happiest with a blank sheet of paper !
I tried that, Lee, plus all the usual "re-connect" etc. but the grid sorted it.

Ray,

You can buy special mouse mats that have a fine pattern of lines etched into them. I have found that as long as the mouse mat has a reasonable amount of texture, the optical mice are generally OK but some seem much more sensitive to the surface they are placed on than others.

They have a fast camera and digital signal processor inside and compare previous and current images. All you need is some detail or texture. I use mine on wooden tables, melamine and paper without problems
