Concerned about damaging the head of my clamps

Hi all,

I am concerned about doing some long term damage to the heads of my clamps when they are being stored. The area they clamp onto, when not in use, is only 40mm. Should I increase the depth, to say 80mm in total, so that most of the head is clamped or doesn't it matter? The clamps are Bessey, the cheap and expensive ones.
