COMP063 Competition -Finished!

At Last Its done!

Details:-
Made from 12"x1" Pine Boards.
Handcut Dovetails.
Mahogany Tray Runners and Joint Strips in the Lid.
Handmade Brass Hinges.
Cherry Ply (6mm) for the base.
'Coopered' Lid.

This is the 3rd thing that I have ever made, apart from the workshop that I made it in.

Couple of mistakes to mention.
I cut one of the Pins too small, hardly noticable but I know its there. Bit disappointed with that one.
I thought I had overdone it with the sanding, but once the oil was on I can still see some very slight marks if you get very close.

I wish I could have made it from some Hardwood, but cost is always an issue. especially as this needed to be quite big.

Things I learned:-
It is as hard as it looks.
But it's still worthwhile.
I like planing.
I need a Jointer Plane.
Poly glue stains fingers.
I don't like sanding.
I wont make any hinges myself again, unless they are wooden.
Measure 5 times and cut once
Dovetails take practice.
Even if its rubbish my Son will like it- Thats all that matters. See pic.

Yes the judges are going to have a tough time. There is some very nice stuff floating about here at the moment. I think there are some very worrying WIP posts too. Cant wait to see all of the finished items. Would be nice to see them all in a single post. Maybe the Mods could fix that?

One day i hope to be able be in the same league as everyone else on here. Its great fun trying though.

The scaling on that piece is amazing... I saw the first pic and didn't notice the plug socket behind and imagined it was a jewelery box that was about say 12" wide... then looked at the second pic with the kids and went "WOW!".

Hmmmmm......yeah, something like that

'Twas a jewelry box in Yew and Bog Oak. The Yew met a nasty end after a fight with the router. Only had just enough to do that one job. ARRRGGGHHHHHH. :x

whilst i agree with the stay idea, and let me say it is a nice box,
another thought is to have a couple of blocks that would stop it closing
without a positive effort at the very end.

maybe something that springs up once the lid opens, and stays at that height say 2 inches if the lid falls, then when you want to shut it, you press on the top, and use a kind of latch with a positive key through.

stays are fine but youg kids are likely to knock them, so the important thing is to go for the non closing block too.

Lee, well done, it certainly looks bigger with the kids next to it.

Can I suggest you look for Drop Leaf stays on the Isaac Lord web site. This will hold the lid open and require slight force (against the friction which can be adjusted) to close them. I bought model no 644 - which is not on their web site. www.isaaclord.co.uk.
Be careful though as there are different types that will only work to stop a flap dropping rather than to keep a lid open. DAMHIKT
