I've been asked if I can make a dough bowl, I have a piece of clean Ash that's big, dry and clean enough (have loads of birch but it's all spalted) my question for you guys is what finish would you suggest, I have a food safe oil but feel a wax may be better suited for dough.

I'd try to get hold of some sycamore - it's got a closed grain, where ash would tend to hold the dough in its coarser structure. I also wouldn't bother with a finish at all - think rolling pins, where you just wash quickly with plain water and dry...

Hiya Stig, in my “toy box” I have something that is used on cutting boards. No idea what’s it’s called. And it’s way to cold to nip out , unlock the garage and search through the box.
If I get chance in the am I will look and pm you

My initial thought to use Ash or Birch is because of their antibacterial properties, I'd prefer to use birch because of the close grain but everything I have is either green or very spalted, I only have green Oak that was felled a few months ago so only leaves me with Ash that's dry enough, I could buy a blank in but they asked for wood from school, whilst they are not in a huge rush for the bowl I don't know if I'm comfortable making them wait a couple months for me to rough turn and dry.

What do you guys call to cold to go out? It's minus -10 here and I'm out cooking on the bbq!

Sycamore was the traditional wood for use in the dairy, as it will take washing on a regular basis without coming to harm, is tasteless and close grained...

We have a couple of old dough proving troughs. Hand hewn. They traditionally had no finish. I would not apply a finish to a wooden bowl for dough. By the same token the woven bannetons have no finish either.

Too cold
As an old fool getting over a chest infection, my days of hiking through snow at neg 19c are long past.
I am champing at the bit waiting to get out in the work shop. So just nipping out in the cold just to read a product label....na. Just went on my back orders to see if I had ordered it from amazom.
