I thought I'd post a couple of pics of two pieces I made over Christmas - the coffee table was delivered before Christmas the TV unit had to follow on later as I didn't have space for both in the workshop at the same time. Both made from American White Ash and finished with Patina. The customer specified the size of the two pieces and said he wanted something chunky. He liked the style of the side tables that I had made for myself which were inspired by a piece Lord Nibbo made a little while back - so thank you once again your Lordship!

I really like these, Steve!

They are lovely, simple pieces that look really attractive and "honest".......(ie they look like they are what they are), and show off one of my favourite woods beautifully. The workmanship looks great too.

I am not familiar with "Patina"......what is it?

My only comment is regarding the grain on the doors/ drawers on the larger unit......looks like you have tried a variation on bookmatching that has worked slightly better on the coffee table than the bigger piece.......but that is being really picky! Overall, they are a couple of really nice pieces of furniture. Well done.

Hi Mike.
If you do a search for Patina on this forum you will come up with a couple of threads where people have used it - including myself. Have a look here for details. It is available from Magnets and other decorating suppliers. It is a gel which you rub well in and it is touch dry straight away. Easy to apply and hardwearing although hard work on a bigger piece!

With regards to the book matching you're right - it did work better on the coffee table drawer fronts. When I cut up the wood for the TV unit I was less fortunate with the grain pattern on the pieces I had selected for the fronts. I ended up doing several and the ones you see are the best. The main thing is that the customer is happy :D

I really like the coffee table in particular. :) I thought 'patina' was something that builds up in or on the finish after the piece has sustained many years of use...?

Oh boy! right up my street, chunky, clean, crisp & simple as in no frills. It hits all the right buttons for me. =D> =D> =D> Nice idea with the box joints too

Thanks for all the comments. I have to say that I also prefer the coffee table - the proportions of the tv unit just don't seem right (l=1800mm, d=400mm, h=360mm). However the customer, who is a designer, had already decided on the basic dimensions and couldn't be persuaded to change. As I think I said earlier, he and his wife are happy and at the end of the day that is what counts.

Steve - couple of nice pieces there for sure. I reckon you're right about the mismatch on the grain for the TV unit, always difficult to get it spot on. As you say, the customer was happy so a good result - Rob

i made the nibbo side tables too about 6 months ago, looks like i just found my next project ! :D
