Following a recent conversation I'd be interested to know of anyone who has used "coachmakers rebate" planes for their intended purpose.
Note how the side of the"open" mouth has a plate screwed across it.
My theory is a groove is first ploughed in the work and then the rest of the waste removed with this style of plane.

Andy, perhaps you may want to try and a have a chat with this chap, Ian Grant he is a wheelwright and carriage builder and is still making carriages and wagons. He is based near Cupar in Fife, all public info
