Presumably the trumps of this world imagine they will be somewhat insulated from the consequences for a while, as they head off in their private jets to more temperate locations on the globe, buying up land and securing the gates to their private compounds. Can't think of any other reason why they're so complacent, except of course complete ignorance, which I doubt.

Since most of them fully support your ideas as they jet about the world doing all the usual things such as planning how to turn you into a pedestrian living in a ville de quarte d'heure spending your digital ration coupons on whatever your social credit score permits you to buy each week, I'm not sure what you and Jacob are so worried about. They've got the whole matter in hand and you're going to own nothing and be very, very happy, let me assure you. And if you aren't you'll soon learn to pretend that you are.

It's still happening but at a fraction of the level, figures above for UK, Poland still an issue for Europe, China making big improvements.
My point is that however bad things get we can still do better than we are. Over all we now use less electricity (2012, 318 TWh : 2023, 250 TWh) and it comes from cleaner sources.
With meat, not just cattle we all know what we need to do. Stop raising meat in South America and shipping it across the world and just eat less of it. As a family we have made a small start in reducing the meat we eat by about a third and buying local (it's better quality) as much as possible. The net cost is very similar and our diet is a bit healthier.

Unfortunately Robin, your visualization of the world and what is happening in it and why is merely an illusion. Let us hope it is a childish illusion based on what is politely called a lack of information, rather than the product of selective blindness induced by ideology. I say that realizing that the odds are against the former as many people go through life not much wiser and not much more informed at their end than they were at their beginning. No need to mention any names.
Monomaniacal adherence to tribalism, ideology or "party lines" is a hallmark of people who cannot or will not think; who prefer the pseudo-religious comforts of "certainty" to the effort required to inform themselves and draw rational conclusions from what is observable, however uncomfortable those conclusions may be. Moral cowardice is one term for this phenomenon.
The attitude to the rise of Nazism in the 1930s was a classic example of such self-delusion. The attitude of the left to the USSR and later the PRC was even more egregious.
Those historical experiences convinced people with the wits to see the obvious that the real divide in politics and ideology is between those who understand the essential primacy of individual rights and freedoms and those who do not. The excuses for attacking and diminishing individual freedoms change like the weather, the effect of doing so is perpetual, and the trend once begun usually ends in mass murder and misery which can last for generations.
We have today and for the time being, access to a variety of information unparalleled in human history. We're wise to avail ourselves of that opportunity while we can. What you will find may well be very frightening and depressing and our emotional predisposition is to look away, but better to face reality before reality "gets in your face", because it will and soon.
