Hello chaps, I don't often come over to the Dark Side :)

I used to have a Record 3 lathe. It did the job. I have the opportunity to buy a CL4 as a replacement. It has a longer bed and variable speed, so it would be a bit of an upgrade.

But.

It's not the current model, but it's clean enough. The main problem is that there is a knocking as it goes round. It's either the phosphor-bronze bearing or the shaft or both.

Can someone tell me what is required to put it right and roughly how much it will cost? What is involved in doing the job?

I've found the replacement parts, I think:
http://www.recordpower-thetoolshop.com/ ... Belts.html

I don't think that either I nor the vendors really know what it's worth in its current state.

Can you help?

Many thanks
Steve

Before you go buying or changing any parts check the pulley's are tight in their respective shafts as well as being in line. Another thing to check is slacken off the the belt and run the motor to see if there is any noise other than what is meant to be.
Whilst the belt is off get hold of the shaft can you move it side to side if you can it may just be a case of adjusting the bronze bearing, go to the Record site and down load a manual to explain how it is done

Hi Steve,
Welcome to the DARK SIDE,I hope that you find some light.
I also have a knocking on my AXI and was going ask for advice,so dalboy thanks for your words of wisdom I shall TRY your suggestions first.

THANK YOU .PETER

Try running the lathe slowly and see if you can identify the frequency of the knocking - is it at the speed of the motor or of the spindle? This may tell you where in the transmission system the knocking is coming from.
Is it the motor fan that is knocking?
Are the pulleys all tight, not wobbling?
If the bronze bearing is too loose or wrongly set, the shaft may have moved along and be knocking inside the headstock.
Try looking inside the headstock whilst turning the lathe by hand - you may not feel the knock, but you may see some movement that shouldn't be there.

Apologies if this is teaching you how to suck eggs.

Steve

It sounds like the pulley is loose on the shaft. You may find there are 2 grubs screws which are used to lock the pulley to the shaft. The top one is simply there to hold the first one in place so remove that one and try tightening the bottom one.

Thank you all. I was hoping to get my hands on it yesterday, but it looks now as if I shall have to wait a bit longer, until after a committee meeting. It would seem that its fate is not yet decided.
I'll bear in mind everything you have ll said. Thank you.

When you say you own a Record 3 do you mean a CL 3? If so just swap the heads over and use the problem as a bargaining tool.
