Returning to woodturning after a long gap. I had a treadle lathe which developed leg muscles as much as turning skills followed by a coronet major followed by a graduate.
I sold that when I went sawmilling instead of turning, and bought a Multico 'cos I didn't like not having anything. Thats on ebay at the moment [subtle plug]
After the life history the question. I have just bought a Sorby lathe , no tooling at all so I need a chuck. Patriot seems obvious but would any of you folks with more up to date knowledge than me think otherwise ?
thanks

Hi ajrolfe, welcome to the forum.

I think most scroll chucks are pretty good these days. My criteria for a good chuck is, adaptability - if you ever change your existing lathe. jaw sets - you'll need these for different jobs, a chuck ain't good with out them, so make sure you can get them, and the cost of each set. They will cost you more than the chuck. Finally cost all the good chucks do much the same, but there is a big difference in the cost of some.

Good luck with your choice, Patriot you have already mentioned, Supernova, another good chuck. Axminster do one as well.

The Patriot is good but the best deal at the moment is the Supernova2 at £129.99 with 2 sets of jaws includes as well as an insert to fit your lathe. Most Record stockist should have this chuck instock.

Hello ajrolfe and welcome,

I've got to agree with richburrow, the Patriot is surely the only choice. There have been a couple of threads on here regarding the quality of supernova jaws since production left NZ, in any case they'll fit the Patriot which in itself is an update on the supernova. The price difference is negligable and I'm sure the patriot will make you smile more :p I have both and just keep the cole jaws on the nova now.

Cheers
Andy

You should also check out the Oneway Talon, its a lovely chuck with a good range of accessories.
regards, beejay
