I think that "cheap" rubbish pine is beautiful, the knots, the grain patterns. So what if they are challenging to work.
Dedication, self-denial and perseverance are what deliver the goods.
I reckon that a few days wrestling with some 5ths or 6ths would stand anyone in good stead. More so than working with compliant well behaved wood. Where's the challenge with that? At the end of the process you'll have some serious wood wrangling skills.
As I said in another thread I made my workbench for a quarter the cost of using decent wood. At that price, mistakes are not too disastrous. You can afford to burn your failures! I know I have. (hammer)
