Hi, i want to buy these three items, i know i'm going to get Ashley Isles chisels, but any suggestions of what range of sizes (about 4) and where from, i've tried e-mailing them and got no responce, as for the others, i've got about £40 to spend on each

Cheers,

Tom

Hi Tom,

Our own mathewwh runs Workshop Heaven who do AI chisels, you'll be hard pushed to find anyone more helpful or who provides better customer service. I'm sure he'll have no problem advising you on sizes based on your proposed usage.
I bought a set from him earlier this year and love them to bits. I found the standard Bubinga handles a little large for my taste though, so Mathew kindly had a set made up for me using the Beech handles normally installed on their carvers. Remember also that these chisels are ground by hand so be prepared for lots of work if, like me, you like flat backs.
Don't forget to factor the cost of sharpening equipment into your budget if you don't already have a decent setup.

Hope this helps.

I'd suggest starting with 1/4", 3/8", 3/4" and 1", or up a step to
3/8", 3/4", 1" and 1-1/4"

cheers,

Ike

I'm a furniture student and i personally bought, mostly from ebay. Old bevel edged chisels, various sizes (cheaper than new ie. AI, or Lie nielson, etc.) SIzes... I would get one big one, (2" around there) and then 3 smaller ones. Old steel is better than new, (to a certain extent) from what i've read.

I bought a Japanese pull saw and it's very fast to cut, but requires a little practice.

Jack plane, i bought a Record no. 5 1/2. old stylee.

Even if you buy new chisels and a saw, i think the most money you can save is a plane. They are readily available second hand. All you really need is a Sharp blade, and a flat sole. There are many flattening sole plane posts on the forum. Plus even more sharpening posts.

BTW. U will also need to buy sharpening stones etc. oil, water, diamond, ceramic, wand, jacob....its up to you.

I'm just a beginner in the wood world, and hope i have helped you in some way, Cheers. :)
