Hi all.
I have a bowl chisel with a fairly steep angled grind on it. I have been reading about long grind bowl gouges and they look rather like spindle gouges and I wondered if they actually are alike apart from the deeper flute?.
I do prefer to use my spindle gouge and thinking of putting a long grind on my bowl gouge but don`t want to knacker it. Is a long grind bowl gouge gound the same ie into a finger nail profile and if so what sort of angle would I grind it to please?
Cheers
Steve

Hi Steve

Have a look here for some useful info and pictures.
I have a bowl gouge with a long fingernail grind, and a couple with more standard short, squarer grind.
Tend to use the long grind for pull-cuts on the wing of the gouge.

Thanks for that Andrew. Seems the average angle of choice for the nose is about 60-65 degs. I assume I set my spindle gouge jig to the same and grind the bowl gouge to end up with a finger nail profile?. Not too sure why the different depths of flute with chisels surely its the grind and cutting edge that matters?.
Thanks again
Steve

Hi Steve,

"Long Grind" refers to how far back toward the handle the grinding goes rather than at what angle the bevel is ground.

The main differences between spindle gouges and bowl gouges are the shape of the tool steel, as you note, the bowl gouge has a deeper flute with much more steel in the tool and they usually have londer handles making them easier to control when you get into the bowl.

My main bowl gouge is ground to about 65 deg and is great for the majority of bowl shapes. The exact angle doesn't really matter and with practice you'll find which angle suits you. All you have to loose is a couple of inches of tool steel so have a go   !!

All the best,

Richard
